Dermatology
Dermatology relates to the treatment of conditions and diseases of the skin, scalp, hair and nails. The physicians that practice dermatology are called dermatologists, and it takes specialised training and qualifications to become a practitioner in dermatology. Dermatologists may use both medicinal and surgical methods to treat patients.
Common skin conditions that many dermatologists treat include acne, eczema, skin cancers, bacteria-related skin conditions, parasitic infections, stings and bites, skin pigmentation problems, nutrition-related problems and many more common and rare skin conditions.
In recent times, dermatologists have also become skilled in the fields of cosmetics, and they may perform certain cosmetic surgeries or procedures. This includes liposuction and facelifts among others, and you should be able to consult each dermatologist individually for the scope of their practice.
Dermatologists will attempt to use the least invasive treatment possible when assessing patients, but medicine, surgery and laser treatments are standard depending on the condition, disease and severity of the situation. Dermatologists may address issues with treatments such as:
- Topical therapies
- Systemic therapies such as antibiotics
- Cryosurgery
- Phototherapy
- Laser therapy such as for tattoo removal
- Hair transplantation
- Hair removal
- Cosmetic surgery
- Plus much more
