Gastroenterology
Gastroenterology refers to the treatment of diseases and conditions of the digestive system. Physicians that are specialists in the field of gastroenterology are known as gastroenterologists, and they focus on the organs from the mouth to the anus. Hepatology is considered as a sub-speciality of physicians practising gastroenterology, and this field encompasses the study of the liver, pancreas and biliary tree.
From the absorption and breaking down of food to the release of waste products and detoxification of the body, many organs work in unison to ensure proper function of the digestive system. Gastroenterologists can assist when any or all of these organs and systems are not functioning as they should due to disease and other conditions.
Some common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract include:
- Esophagitis
- Gastritis
- Peptic ulcers
- Appendicitis
- Crohn's disease
- Bowel obstruction
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Proctitis
- Plus many more
Apart the diseases directly affecting the gastrointestinal tract, there are also the following conditions that can also impact heavily upon the digestive system:
- Liver disease
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- Pacreatitis
- Gallstones
- Hernias
Diagnosis of any of these conditions and more may be carried out with the use of physical examination, blood tests, stool samples, x-rays and endoscopy, which uses a probe, fibre-optic cable and camera to broad images to a connecting display screen. Depending on the diagnosis and the condition, treatments can vary largely.
In some cases, topical creams, medication or nutritional changes may form part of the treatment. In other cases, surgery or long-term care may be a component of treatment. In the case of cancers, chemotherapy and surgery may be alternatives.
